Cybernetic Landwalker Challenge Highlights

          The following photos were taken at the Sixth Annual Cybernetic LandWalker Challenge. This event was held on Saturday May 11, 2002 at DA Morrison Junior High School in Toronto

          Sponsored by the Applied Science and Technology Teachers of Ontario, ASTTO, this challenge was open to all students from grades 4 to 10:

            Level one: grades 4 - 6
            Level two: grades 7 - 8
            Level three: grades 9 - 10
          Each team consisted of five students, a sponsoring teacher, an industrial sponsor and an engineer/ technician volunteer. The LAND WALKER was required to use a given motor (supplied) to make an artificial life form which would meet each of the following benchmarks:
                          


            i) Walk on a flat surface
            ii) Walk on astroturf
            iii) Walk on sand
            iv) Walk up an inclined hill (20 degrees)
            v) Walk over an object
            vi) The Endurable Walker -uses only one battery throughout the testing period
          Students were also be required to submit a Design Portfolio as part of the competition. The portfolio was an engineering report which described the design and construction of the LAND WALKER.

          Congratulations!
          Congratulations to all of the teams which particpated in the days events. Every landwalker was unique and rose to the challenges provided. Fortythree (43) teams entered the competition. The winners for each division were as follows:

             Grades 9 and 10 Champs:
              First Place, Malvern CI - Black Knights
              Second Place, DA Morrison Jr. HS- Blood Sucker
              Third Place, Pleasant View Jr. HS - Fused

             Grades 7 and 8 Champs:
              First Place, Don Valley Middle School - Hyper Android
              Second Place, Don Valley Middle School - Jaguars
              Third Place, Don View Middle School - Creepy Crawlers

             Grades 4 to 6 Champs:
              First Place, Blantyre PS - Team 1
              Second Place, Blantyre PS - Team 2
              Third Place, Withrow PS - Walkers
