| The
4-Way Test Story
The 4-Way Test consists of four short questions, 24 words, which can make a difference in our lives. It encourages us to examine our patterns of choosing, evaluating and acting. It is an objective guide, which we can use in deciding how best to respond in a given situation. It does not provide answers in itself, but encourages creative and effective solutions in problem solving situations. It deals with human relationships. It carries us out beyond ourselves
into the lives and concerns of other people. It can create an attitude
and atmosphere in which people can better relate, share and implement
ideas. In the 1940’s, the test was adopted by Rotary International and became a vital part of its program. When Herbert J. Taylor served as President of Rotary International from 1954 to 1955, he promoted the use of the 4-Way Test around the world.

The 4-Way Test at Windsor-Roseland Starting in 1993, Roseland Rotarian Lloyd Morgan started a program to introduce the Four Way Test into the classrooms of the Windsor and Essex County. The program was an overnight success. Roseland now sponsors all of the city and county schools both public and separate. Each student is given a ruler with the Four Way Test imprinted and posters are located in grades 4 and 5 classrooms. Lloyd has continued to expand his program to schools in other areas of Canada and the United States. Windsor-Roseland Rotarians have taken the 4-Way Test as far as Africa and the Amazon. That the test does work when applied in people’s lives has been proven all over the world. Today the test is translated into the language of more than a hundred countries. It sits on the desks of thousands of business and professional leaders throughout the world and is on the walls of schools, libraries, factories, businesses or wherever people meet and work. Communities and organizations have initiated campaigns to use the 4-Way Test using billboards, posters and media ads. It has inspired safe driving programs, fire prevention campaigns, crime reduction activities and labour negotiations. In business, civic life, at school and at home the 4-Way Test dramatically speaks its effectiveness. It helps us to think beyond our immediate desires, to consider the consequences of our actions and not focus on what is merely expedient right now. The 4-Way Test acts as a lubricant that smoothes personal relations by basing them on truth, fairness and consideration for others. |
