Peace Initiative

Peace City

The Rotary club of Windsor-Roseland, working with the other Windsor Rotary clubs, was successful in having the city of Windsor designate itself a "Rotary International Peace City” in 2001. Subsequently, the Roseland Peace Committee, under the chair of Anna Jurak, has gone on to erect the Peace Monument, hold annual peace skates, and designate elementary schools as "peace schools".

Peace Skates

Peace Skates have been held with many Windsor elementary schools and at times open to the general population. Windsor is blessed with
the Charles Clarke skating pad, part of the Charles Clarke Square. This makes an excellent outdoor skating venue which is overlooked by the Windsor Peace Monument.

We were awarded a $65,000 Trillium grant for the “Rotary Peace Monument” in Charles Clark Square which was dedicated in 2003.

Peace Schools

As a continuation of our Rotary Peace Project, in an effort to promote world peace and understanding, the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland is awarding Rotary Peace School prizes to elementary schools in the city and county that demonstrate commitment to these ideals. Schools that reach a certain level of activity in this area will be designated a “Rotary Peace School” and will receive a plaque to display proudly. Each year 4 schools will receive a peace pole to be planted on the school grounds, a plaque, rubber bracelets for each person in the school to remind them of their commitment, and an invitation to the annual “Peace Skate” on February 23, where skates, food and transportation will be provided. The committee is applying for funding for the next three years for this project. For more details on this program click here.
