Protecting against JS/Kak.worm.a

November 12th, 1999 Microsoft has identified vulnerability with Internet Explorer's security between imbedded scripting languages. Windows Update is a website which allows Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP users to effortlessly apply updates to their operating system. Microsoft has categorized in levels of priority from Critical to Recommended, this security issue is listed as critical. Interacting with Windows Update does not involve submitting information about yourself or the computer to Microsoft.

The following will get you started in cleaning your computer from the KAK worm.

Step 1:

Using Internet Explorer type in the address bar http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ (or click on the link). You'll be directed to a screen very similar to the screen shot below.

Step 2:

From this screen you'll have a group called Critical Updates Package, it is preferred to have this check marked and click the Blue Download arrow in the upper right.

Step 3:

Review the screen and click on the Blue Start Download button.


Step 4:

You must agree to the term and conditions so that you can proceed. When you click on yes, then the second screen below will show the status of the download and install process. Just be patient as the computer does the work, it does not take long.

Step 5:

As the installation completes you'll then be prompted to restart your computer. You must do so in order for the settings to take in effect. After you have restarted, the next time you look at your email, the letters that contains JS/KAK.worm will warn you about the unsafe content.
