Disabling An Inactive Network Connection in XP

Windows XP users may be able to obtain increased dialup internet access speeds by disabling a disconnected network connection. If this icon always appears in your system tray (the section of your start menu where the time appears) and your computer is currently not connected to a network, or using high speed internet access such as DSL, click on the icon and a message similar to this should appear:

To disable the connection:

1. Right click on the icon to bring up the following menu:

2. Click "Open Network Connections" to bring up the following window:

3. Right click on the local area connection with a red "X" on the icon to bring up the following popup menu:

4. Click "disable" to disable the connection. The icon should now disappear from your system tray. Next time you connect using your dialup internet connection you may experience a faster connection.

If you experience any problems or wish to re-enable the network connection for any reason, do the following:

1. Click Start, then Control Panel then double click Network Connections.
2. Right click the same connection and select enable.
