Date: [18:30 Aug. 1/2001] Failure of our primary power backup caused WINCOM's core router to stop functioning. This caught us off guard and took approx. one hour and fifteen minutes to rectify. The problem was resolved at 19:45 Aug. 1 2001 Date: [20:35 Jul. 31/2001] Status: Notice Subject: Switching AntiSpam provisions. It is tough to keep spam from being delivered to our clients but we try to keep on top of things. When ORBS lost a court case to a couple of New Zealand we had to look for same kind of protection and for a while we were using MAPS RSS and MAPS DUL. Since we intended MAPS to be temporary till ORBS returns. As of Aug 1, 2001 we have offically switched over to ORBSL. So if there are any problems with delivering emails to WINCOM and its customers please check out ORBSL.org Date: [13:15 Jul. 11/2001] Status: Notice Subject: Email expiries implemented on mail server. As regular email practice WINCOM does not recommend leaving mail on the Mail Server. Just as postal mailboxes are not used for long-term storage we have implemented that policy on email accounts. So emails that are three (3) months old is being expired to save space for new messages. Date: [03:10 Jul. 12/2001] Status: Completed Subject: Authentication Server went offline The Authentication server's hardware (mainly the main processor) started to be unstable and later stop functioning. A complete rebuild was required and completed 03:00 July 12th. The down-age started 00:00h July 12th till 03:00h a complete rebuild was required. Date: [08:10 20 Apr. 24/2001] Status: In Progress Subject: Installation of anti-spam provisions in our mail server near completion WINCOM's duties as a mail server for our clients puts us in a good position for preventing much of the Spam that is transmitted daily from ever reaching our clients' mailboxes. Our mail server software, dmail, allows us to define special rules which we can use to block incoming Spam messages. In the past these rules had to be softened or in some cases removed as they applied globally to each and every account on our server and in some cases users wanted to accept Spam. Spam tends to originate from a handful of well-known sites on the Internet. WINCOM subscribes to the Mail Abuse Prevention System - Realtime Blackhole List (MAPS RBL), which allows us to block email from known spammers "in real time" without any effort. The MAPS RBL is a database of sites from which Spam is known to have originated. Our server checks all incoming mail to see if it came from one of those sites, and if so, promptly rejects the message. For more information about the RBL, see the Realtime Blackhole List website. ORBS, or the Open Relay Behaviour-modification System, is a database for tracking mail servers that have been confirmed to permit third-party relay. These servers permit spammers to connect to them from anywhere in the world, usually from a modem connection, and then forward the Spam to its intended recipients. It also tracks networks that prevent ORBS from verifying whether or not their mail servers continue to permit third-party relay. For more information about ORBS, see the ORBS website.
