Section 5

Port of Windsor (Seaway)

The Port of Windsor as a viable mode of transportation faces challenges that will affect the well being of the regional economy.  The following operational issues require greater examination:

·        The Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce encourages the Canadian Federal government to recognize the strategic importance of the Great Lakes/St.Lawrence Seaway System and to Develop legislative, regulatory, and economic frameworks that provide equity in the national transportation system and particularly as it relates to the transportation of grain.

·        The Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce supports Canadian participation in the United States Army Corps of Engineers study on long-term cost/benefit analysis for expanding the St. Lawrence Seaway to accommodate larger vessels.

·        The Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce encourages technological innovation as a key to maintaining and improving the competitiveness of the Great Lakes-St.Lawrence waterway.

·        The Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce encourages the Federal government to recognize that security within the nation’s ports is a federal responsibility and that the necessary funding be allocated immediately to ensure that the nation’s ports meet international security standards.

The Great Lakes/St.Lawrence Seaway System is a critical transportation link for the Province of Ontario, and the Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce encourages the Province to become fully engaged in the future viability and growth of that system.
