U.S. PASSPORT REQUIREMENT A 'BIG SLEEPER ISSUE' FOR BUSINESS

October 17, 2005 - the Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce continues to monitor the issue of the U.S. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requiring all U.S. and Canadian citizens to have a passport or other accepted secure document to enter or re-enter the United States by January 1, 2008. The U.S. administration is currently consulting with Border stakeholders and has formally requested input by the public until October 31, 2005. The new requirements could deter occasional visitors from crossing the border, posing a threat to the local tourism and hospitality industry.
