FROM THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF WINDSOR
IN RESPONSE TO “ATTACK ON AMERICA”
SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
On behalf of all Windsor residents, I
would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to our American neighbours
in light of the tragic events in the United States today.
While it appears there is no direct
threat of an attack on Windsor, given our proximity to Detroit, we have
entered into a state of Emergency Preparedness.
I have spoken to Mayor Dennis Archer
to offer whatever assistance our city can provide to the City of Detroit
and he was most grateful. My office remains in constant contact with Mayor
Archer’s office.
Locally, we have activated the
Emergency Operations Centre and have been in contact with both the County
of Essex Emergency Planner and Emergency Measures Operations of Ontario.
The OPP has been contacted with respect to traffic issues from the 401 to
the border points in Windsor.
The Tunnel authorities have advised
that the Tunnel will re-open at 12:00 noon for only homebound traffic –
in both directions – and the authorities are hoping to resume normal
operations by 5:00 p.m.
All departures from Windsor Airport
have been cancelled to allow for diversions of aircraft. The entire Air
Canada fleet has been grounded. Windsor Airport is standing by to assist
in the event that assistance is needed.
We have also made arrangements to
extend the hours of operations at three of our Day Cares to accommodate
those families who may be delayed at the border. If you require that
service, call 255-5212.
I have called a special meeting of
Council at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. This is consistent with our Emergency
Operations Plan.
We will continue to monitor the
situation and keep in contact with all of the key personnel. As more
information becomes available, my office will provide updates to the
media. Again, we offer our heartfelt prayers to our American neighbours
during this trying period.
