CYBERNETIC LAND WALKER CHALLENGE


      Are you looking for a great activity which will highlight your programme to parents? Are you trying to show the public the value your programme has for today's technology market? Then why not consider entering a team, or several teams, of students in the The ASTTO 6th Annual Cybernetic Land Walker Challenge?


      This exciting challenge will turn your students on to math, science, design, materials and technology. Being held on the last Saturday of Education Week,your participation could be well advertised in your boards list of "Education Week Highlights". Read below to learn more:

    The DTTO 7 TH ANNUAL CYBERNETIC LAND WALKER CHALLENGE
    Saturday May 10, 2003
    at DA Morrison Junior High School
    Toronto

      Sponsored by the Design and Technology Teachers of Ontario, DTTO, this challenge is open to all students from grades 3 to 10:
        Level one: grades 3 - 6
        Level two: grades 7 - 8
        Level three: grades 9 - 10
      Each team will consist of five students, a sponsoring teacher, an industrial sponsor and an engineer/ technician volunteer. The LAND WALKER will use a given motor (supplied) to make an artificial life form which will meet each of the following benchmarks:
        i) Walk on a flat surface
        ii) Walk on astroturf
        iii) Walk on sand
        iv) Walk up an inclined hill (20 degrees)
        v) Walk over an object
        vi) The Endurable Walker -uses only one battery throughout the testing period
        vii) The Distance Walker - the furthest distance from East to West
      Students will also be required to submit a Design Portfolio as part of the competition. The portfolio is an engineering report which will describe the design and construction of the LAND WALKER. Further details of information required to be entered into the portfolio will be provided at the address listed below.

      The cost to participate is twentyfive dollars ($25.00). For this money you will receive; a servo motor, a battery holder, sample gears/pulleys, sample axles, and a package of Cybernetic Land Walker notes.
