CHEMICAL NOMENCLATURE

NAMES AND SYMBOLS OF THE ELEMENTS

The following is a list of the first 20 elements and their chemical symbols. Some of the more common elements and their chemical symbols are also included. Note the following:

The first letter in the symbol of any chemical element is always a capital letter.

The second letter in the symbol of any chemical element (if one exists) is always a small letter.

Many chemical symbols represent the English name of the element.

Each element is identified by a number called its ATOMIC NUMBER.
