Unit Knowledge Objectives - at the end of this unit, you should be able to

1.   Define biology and explain each of the characteristics of life.

2.   Define the following: nutrients, organic, inorganic, proton, neutron, electron

3.   Explain what carbohydrates are and describe their structures, types and functions in the body.

4.   What are lipids? Describe their structure, functions, types, and purposes in our bodies. Distinguish between saturated and unsaturated fats, cholesterol, and low and high density lipoproteins.

5.   Describe the structure of an amino acid and the function of its’ parts. How are peptide bonds formed. What functions do proteins serve in our bodies.

6.   Distinguish among the various levels of protein substructure (primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary). Distinguish between coagulation and denaturation.

7.   Describe the roles that each of the following play in our bodies: vitamins, minerals, and water. (Including the specific ones in the homework)

8.   Identify the effects of various dietary supplements on our bodies. Identify the benefits, shortfalls, and precautions associated with alternative diets.

9.   Be able to construct molecular models of the main organic nutrients.
