Three
College Scholarships

The
Rotary Club of Taylor presented three college scholarships
to graduating seniors from Taylor high schools. The presentation
of $1,000 scholarships took place during the May 13 meeting
of the Taylor Rotary Club at the Lakes of Taylor Golf Club.
The
winners included Felicia Raupp, 17, and Amanda Green, 18,
both from John F. Kennedy High School and Quantus Remmer from
Harry S Truman High School. All three students are active
in sports, maintain jobs, hold positions in youth committees
and have displayed a concern in 'Lending a Hand' to the local
community - 2004 Rotary International theme. Felicia will
attend Indiana Institute of Technology; Amanda and Quantus
will attend Eastern Michigan University.
Felicia
was active in softball and was Student Council representative
while maintaining a demanding course schedule. She was a peer
educator, worked with kids over the summer with drug prevention,
and assisted with fund-raisers and school activities.
Amanda
was active in soccer and cheerleading, she was class president
and was on the homecoming court. She is a member of the National
Honor Society and the historian for S.A.D.D. (Students Against
Destructive Decisions) and served at numerous charity functions
and on many other youth committees. She also maintained a
4.381 grade point average.
Quantus
was active in track and field and drama.
He has worked year-round for the Taylor Teen Health
Center for three years.
He participates as a counselor for youth camps and
also is active in other youth event committees.
Taylor
Rotarian Arnie Germaine, retired Taylor school principal,
reviewed the applications and made recommendations to the
executive committee. Selection is based on grade point average,
school and activity participation, citizenship, community
involvement and the financial need.
Incoming
high school seniors interested in applying for the scholarship
may obtain an application from the Counselor for Seniors office. Applications are made available after spring break.

Dear Rotarians of the Taylor Rotary:
Almost
four years ago, I had one of the most memorable moments
of my life. I left the city of Taylor, the Taylor Rotary
Club and my host families ( Kaul«s and Sutyak«s) which had
been all together for that past year ( 1999-2000) my great
family. Back to Brazil, I brought along with me a great
life experience, making me understand the world much better.
The year that I have lived in Taylor will be kept in my
memory forever and I«m sure I will pass it to my next generations.
Also, I couldn«t forget all the friends that I have made,
specially at Rotary club and my host families. For me, these
friendships are the most valuable gift that I received.
Today,
I«m in an catholic university in the city of Porto Alegre
(state of Rio Grande do Sul, most southern state of Brazil)
in the fourth semester of the Aeronautical Science college.
And I have only one more year to go. Porto Alegre is located
750 miles from Salto, my home town. By the end of college,
I«ll have about 160 hours of flight, and I hope to get an
airline job soon. I remember when I was in Taylor and the
Rotarians used to ask me what kind of college I wanted to
go, and I always answered that I wanted to be a plane pilot.
So, going to an Aeronautical Science college is for me,
a dream come true. I always wanted to do that. And somehow
Rotary takes part on my formation because you gave the chance
to know another language and culture and to meet nice people.
Well,
since I«m a student and I live far from home, I miss my
family and girlfriend (we have been together for more almost
three years) and I want to see them every time is possible.
So, in the end of April I went home for 10 days. In that
opportunity I took some pictures of the laundry equipments
that you Rotarians of the Taylor Rotary combined efforts
to acquire. The laundry equipments are being very useful
and helpful in that house for elderly. I felt very happy
to see those equipments being used, and I realized that
without your help, this wouldn«t be happening.
The
city of Salto is very proud of this elder care facility,
for serving the community with high quality services and
for being a non-profit institution. They survive through
donations, promotions and volunteer job. They have won many
awards for these quality services. I«ll keep taking pictures
of the equipments from time to time as long as I can, because
I feel responsible to show you that something you have done
is helping other people. Me, the Rotary Club of Salto and
the asylum ÒLar Frederico OzanamÓ are very thankful for
your kindness.
I
attached to this e-mail the pictures that me and my girlfriend
have taken. She helped me to do that. When we went to take
the pictures of the equipments there were two employees
working on it. Also, I took some pictures of the front of
the building., which is quite big. I numbered the pictures,
than I wrote what shows each one. If possible I would like
this message to reach every Rotarian of Taylor Rotary. I
hope to see everybody someday. I promisse.
Best regards Fabio Henrique Tomazini Taylor Rotary Inbound
Exchange Student (1999-2000)
