You Can See the World - Or maybe help Change it!

Study Abroad for a Year through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.
It's the chance of your lifetime!

Rotary International is a service organization.  One of their goals is to promote world peace and understanding.  Experience shows that there's no better way to foster international goodwill than with students.

The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is for students eager for the chance to try new things and experience other cultures on a personal level.  It’s a great opportunity to learn not only about other people, but also about themselves.  There are two types of exchanges available.   One is for an entire school year, starting next fall.  The other is for a 3-4 week period next summer. All Rotarians are strictly volunteers who have a strong love and passion for this valuable program!

Here's how the selection process works.  To qualify, you must be in:

                Good health,
                The top 1/3 of your class academically,
                Between the ages of 16 and 18 1⁄2 (at the beginning of the year abroad, which will begin in August, 2005)

Students interested in applying will be asked to fill out a preliminary application and submit it by November 4, 2004 to Demo for placement with a sponsoring Rotary Club.  Students selected for an interview will be invited to bring their parents to meet with Rotarians from the sponsoring club. Students sponsored by one of the clubs will need to complete an application form, pay a $50 nonrefundable application fee, and then attend an interview with their parents.

To qualify to be a RYE Student, students who will be age 16 to 18 1/2 (you must have been born between March 1, 1987 and October 1, 1989) at the start of the exchange and are in the upper third of their academic class, must apply through their local Rotary club the prior November 4, 2004.
If their application (interviews with the students and their parents are required) is accepted, the student will be required to participate in four conferences to prepare them for their year abroad.

They will be responsible for their own airfare, spending money, administrative, and incidental expenses during their year abroad; room and board (host families) and a monthly allowance are provided through their hosting Rotary club.

See the Outbound Page for more details.

The objectives of Rotary Youth Exchange are:
To further international goodwill and understanding by enabling students to study firsthand some of the accomplishments and problems of people in other parts of the world;
To enable students to advance their education by studying for a year in an environment different from their own;
To broaden their own outlook by learning to live with and meet people of different cultures and creeds;
To act as ambassadors of their country, state, and hometown by addressing Rotary clubs, community organizations, and youth groups in their host country; and share as much knowledge as they can of their country and discuss its attributes, good and bad, with the people they meet during their year in a host country; and,
Following their return form their year abroad, to share with others in their local community and beyond the knowledge they have gained from their exchange experience.

Exchanges can occur between any two countries in which there are Rotary clubs. Rotary clubs in approximately 50 different countries annually sponsor or host Youth Exchange students. A thorough orientation program for students and their parents is provided by the sponsoring Rotary club. And the host Rotary club provides support and guidance on the receiving end of the exchange. While room and board for the exchange is provided by the host family, the student and his own family assume certain financial obligations. These include round-trip air transportation, clothing, health insurance, and incidental expenses (pocket money) for the student. The host Rotary club will provide a modest monthly allowance and usually pays the studentŐs tuition for all required academic programs.

You can make a difference in a world of differences by taking a step toward promoting world understanding through Youth Exchange.

See our Club Profile Page for a local Rotary club today. The world always needs more ambassadors for peace and world understanding,
